January

Climbing Mt. Shirayama on New Year's Day (Shirayama-gantan-tozan)

This event is sponsored by the Hakuzan Elementary School Children's Association. It is held before sunrise on New Year's Day. Participants make a 20-minute climb from Shirayama Shrine up to the peak of the mountain. From the peak, participants enjoy watching the sunrise. After making their way down to the foot of the mountain, participants are served warm zenzai (red bean soup) and other things.

  • Parking is available.
    Get off at Kotoden's Hakuzan Station.
    Shimotakaoka, Miki Town

Mt. Kozen Park (enjoying the sunrise)

From this park at the top of Mt. Kozen, participants can watch the sunrise and have a beautiful view of the Sanuki plains, Takamatsu City and the Seto Inland Sea and her islands. Residents serve oden (stewed vegetables and other things) mandarin oranges, and sake to visitors. In addition visitors are welcome to join in and make red and white rice cakes.

May

Every year on May 23rd, Myotokuji Temple in Hiragi holds a spring market. There are plants for sale and stalls are set up selling a variety of things.

On May 28th, Anyoji Temple in Ikenobe holds the last spring market of the season.

August

On the first Saturday and Sunday of August, Tanabata Festival (Star Festival) is held in the Ikenobe Shopping Arcade (area around Ikenobe Shoko Center). There are many things for families to enjoy the crowning of the Tanabata Queens, singing, dancing, fireworks, a haunted house, tea ceremony and much, much more.

Bon Dance Festival

This festival, held in Walking Center, is a rather new event, just starting in 2001. The grounds are decorated with colorful lanterns and children and adults form a circle and dance. The audience is also welcome to take part.

Tsuyanagi, Okuyama District Festival

This festival is held on August 15th. People who are home to visit and local residents get together. There is also a bon dance held in hopes of revitalizing the community.

Tanaka District¡Çs Guardian Deity of Children Festival

This festival is held in Tanaka Shopping Arcade, on the Saturday closest to August 23rd. Participants can enjoy bon dance, fireworks, karaoke and much, much more. Participants also form a circle and pray using Buddhist prayer beads.

Komino District¡Çs Summer Festival

Both local residents and non-residents get together. This festival is held in hopes of revitalizing the community.

September

One of the biggest events in Miki Town is the "Shishimai Festa" - or the Lion Dancing Festival. It is held on the last Saturday of September in Miki Town's Sports Park.

Participants can enjoy the heroic lion dancing of the 3 gigantic lions and 40 small lions.

Aside from lion dancing, participants can enjoy local products, find out more about their health, learn more about welfare issues and much, much more. A new addition to the Shishimai Festa is "Shikomai Dancing".
